Studies show that there has to be a positive balance in work environments, which are influenced by stability/security, work environment and employee empowerment.
There are data that should not be underestimated: 79% of employees do not consider that good work or extra effort is adequately recognized. The average number of hours worked in Spain per person is 1,724. This is, according to a person’s expected working life, 36 years.
Professionals spend more than 62,000 hours at work. This is more than enough time to consider the need to take care of people’s well-being at work, as a lack of well-being at work can lead to absenteeism, low productivity and lower employee engagement, with the consequent impact on the bottom line.
Let us remember that an average of 1.5 million workers miss work every day, which translated into euros in 2023 meant a total cost throughout Spain of 37,000 million. Also, mental health has a significant impact on the performance, satisfaction and motivation of workers, being the main cause of absenteeism in Spain, accounting for 51% of absences.
Having a good labor relations system is a guarantee to be able to reverse situations such as those described above, which are so common in Spain. Working in the concept of “one team” (company and workers) leads to guarantee a virtuous circle of improvement of the work environment and to be more competitive (employees and company), which means an improvement in productivity, a reduction of absenteeism (people with less stress levels, more motivated, creative and innovative), and social improvements.
One of the initiatives that we have launched from Valorian, is the MSV (Union Value Model), where we offer solutions for our affiliates, such as:
- Telemedicine platform with eleven medical specialties
- Training platform with more than 650 courses
- Discounts on more than 400 brands
These solutions, together with the MSV (Trade Union Value Model) developed by us, provide a clear contribution to employee welfare, reduction of absenteeism, and as a result, improved productivity and competitiveness. We must not forget that our members are people who work in the 115 companies where we are represented.
According to a study by Harvard University and MIT, paying attention to wellness within companies leads to:
- Sales increase: +37%.
- Productivity improvement: +31%.
- Reduction of work errors: -19%.
- Increased team creativity: +55%.
- Reduction of absences: -25%
All this is not possible without a proper model of HR and HR working with the social part (union with MSV, to which we referred).
In other words, companies working in environments where negotiations are hostile or could be hostile will be less likely to succeed with respect to these measures.
The training of the working person also contributes to well-being. Spain is at the bottom of the list in terms of unfilled vacancies compared to Europe, and many managers complain about the lack of qualified people. The Bank of Spain itself points out that 41% of the companies consulted by this organization perceive problems of availability to fill their vacancies.
This number of companies complaining about not being able to fill all their vacancies, according to the supervisory body, practically coincides with some of the figures in the latest Adecco Report on Most Demanded Profiles in 2024. This report indicates that 45% of the employers and managers of this multinational human resources management company attribute this lack of talent to fill vacancies “to the lack of profiles in line with the positions that really need to be filled”. At the same time, 35% attribute this situation to the “lack of adequate training”.
The shortage of profiles with the necessary technological skills causes a problem beyond unfilled jobs: it slows growth and innovation and limits the chances of achieving a sustainable economic recovery. This, translated to national territory, means that the number of ICT profiles should increase in Spain by more than 1.39 million, according to the SEPE.
This existing problem has led us to create a training platform to help workers and companies to be trained in those issues currently needed and to help contribute to those existing vacancies.
