Why Purpose is Pivotal
In the wake of the pandemic, surveys show that many employees are reassessing their priorities and are reexamining the commitment vis-à-vis their employer. At the same time, a growing number of stakeholders are putting pressure on firms to take a stance on critical social and political issues, including climate change, the treatment of minorities, and inequality. What connects the two challenges is “purpose.” Research shows that employees who find purpose at work are far more productive, more engaged, and more loyal. Taking a public positions on key issues, in turn, credibly signals the organization’s value and purpose, not just to external stakeholder but also internally to employees. This session will illuminate both internal and external dynamics to show why having a clearly defined purpose is pivotal for any leading organization.
David Bach is Professor of Strategy and Political Economy at IMD. He also serves as the school’s Dean of Innovation and Programs. Through his award-winning teaching and writing, Bach helps managers and senior executives develop a strategic lens for the nexus of business and politics. His course “The End of Globalization?” – designed in the aftermath of the Brexit vote and the rise of populist leaders across Western democracies – received the 2018 Ideas Worth Teaching Award from the Aspen Institute. Prior to joining IMD, Bach was Professor in the Practice of Management and Deputy Dean at Yale School of Management. Born and raised in Germany, Professor Bach completed his undergraduate studies at Yale and earned a PhD in political science from the University of California at Berkeley.
