Why Purpose is Pivotal<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the wake of the pandemic, surveys show that many employees are reassessing their priorities and are reexamining the commitment vis-\u00e0-vis their employer. At the same time, a growing number of stakeholders are putting pressure on firms to take a stance on critical social and political issues, including climate change, the treatment of minorities, and inequality. What connects the two challenges is \u201cpurpose.\u201d Research shows that employees who find purpose at work are far more productive, more engaged, and more loyal. Taking a public positions on key issues, in turn, credibly signals the organization\u2019s value and purpose, not just to external stakeholder but also internally to employees. This session will illuminate both internal and external dynamics to show why having a clearly defined purpose is pivotal for any leading organization.<\/p>\n

David Bach<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is Professor of Strategy and Political Economy at IMD. He also serves as the school\u2019s Dean of Innovation and Programs.\u00a0Through his award-winning teaching and writing, Bach helps managers and senior executives develop a strategic lens for the nexus of business and politics. His course \u201cThe End of Globalization?\u201d \u2013 designed in the aftermath of the Brexit vote and the rise of populist leaders across Western democracies \u2013 received the 2018 Ideas Worth Teaching Award from the Aspen Institute.\u00a0Prior to joining IMD, Bach was Professor in the Practice of Management and Deputy Dean at Yale School of Management.\u00a0Born and raised in Germany, Professor Bach completed his undergraduate studies at Yale and earned a PhD in political science from the University of California at Berkeley.<\/em><\/p>\n
